Understanding egg freezing

What is egg freezing?

Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, involves stimulating the ovaries to develop multiple eggs, retrieving the eggs and freezing suitable mature eggs for storage. If you decide to use them in the future, the eggs can be thawed and fertilised as part of assisted reproduction treatment.

Egg freezing does not guarantee a future pregnancy, but it may provide an additional reproductive option for the future.

Why consider egg freezing?

Why might you consider freezing your eggs?

There is no single reason to consider egg freezing. For some, it is about timing. For others, it may be about personal circumstances or concerns about future fertility.

The timing is not right yet

Your personal circumstances or plans may mean that you are not ready to try for a pregnancy now.

You are thinking about your future fertility

Egg number and egg quality generally decline with age. You may want to understand whether freezing eggs now could provide an additional option later.

You want to understand your ovarian reserve

Tests such as Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) and an antral follicle count (AFC) can help your specialist assess your ovarian reserve and likely response to stimulation.

Age and egg freezing

When should I consider freezing my eggs?

Age is one of the most important factors to consider when thinking about egg freezing.

Both egg quantity and egg quality generally decline with age. Egg freezing cannot stop this biological process, but it allows eggs to be collected and stored at the age at which they are retrieved.

The right time to consider egg freezing will depend on your individual circumstances, ovarian reserve and plans for the future.

Elective egg freezing in Singapore: women aged 21 to 37 may undergo elective egg freezing. Women above 37 may discuss their individual circumstances with their assisted reproduction practitioner, as appeals may be considered by the Ministry of Health on a case-by-case basis.

Your egg freezing journey

What happens during an egg freezing cycle?

The process is similar to the egg retrieval stage of IVF, but the retrieved eggs are frozen rather than fertilised.

1

Consultation

Meet your fertility specialist to discuss your medical history, circumstances and whether egg freezing may be suitable for you.

2

Fertility assessment

Your specialist may assess your ovarian reserve using blood tests and ultrasound.

3

Ovarian stimulation

Hormone medication is used to encourage multiple follicles to develop, with monitoring during the cycle.

4

Egg retrieval

Once the follicles are ready, the eggs are collected during an egg retrieval procedure.

5

Freezing and storage

Suitable mature eggs are cryopreserved and stored for possible future use.

A common question

How many eggs should I freeze?

There is no single number that is right for everyone. The number of eggs retrieved in one cycle varies between individuals, and not every retrieved egg will necessarily be mature or suitable for freezing.

Your doctor can help you understand what may be realistic based on your age, ovarian reserve and response to stimulation.

Using your frozen eggs later

What happens if I decide to use my frozen eggs?

If you decide to use your frozen eggs in the future, your fertility team will review your circumstances and advise on the appropriate treatment pathway.

Not every frozen egg will survive thawing, fertilise, develop into an embryo or result in a pregnancy. Egg freezing should therefore be considered an option for preserving future reproductive choices rather than a guarantee.

Under current Singapore regulations, eggs frozen through elective egg freezing may be used for procreation by a legally married couple.
